AAC Provider Directory

This resource is for informational purposes only. We compiled it to help you search for a non-school-based AAC Specialist. It is not an exhaustive list of all AAC providers in Washington State. Inclusion on this list does not signify endorsement or recommendation from NWACS. Use of any information provided on this website is at your own risk, for which NWACS shall not be held liable.

NWACS does not know if providers on this list are currently taking new clients. This information is current to the best of our ability as of January 2023. If you spot a needed update, please send us an email at info@nwacs.info. Thank you for helping us keep this information up-to-date and useful!

There are different ways to get an AAC evaluation:

  1. Education

    • Assistive Technology Consideration through an Individualized Education Program (IEP)

      • If the person is school-age, contact their teacher or IEP team to refer them for an evaluation by an assistive technology specialist.

      • To read more about getting an AAC Evaluation in the schools, CLICK HERE

    • Funding

      • This evaluation is at no cost to you.

      • Keep in mind: if the school district provides the AAC device, it belongs to the school district. A plan will need to be made to get a device owned by the AAC user before transitioning out of school.

  2. Healthcare

    • AAC Evaluation provided by a Speech-Language Pathologist

      • Speak with the person’s primary care provider about the person’s communication and request a referral for an AAC Evaluation and Treatment.

      • You can use this list to help you find providers near where you live.

      • This infographic shows the process for getting an AAC system when trying to go through insurance.

    • Funding

      • Check with your insurance for coverage for an “Augmentative Alternative Communication” evaluation.

      • This evaluation (and any therapy) would be billed through your insurance (if the provider is in-network with your insurance). You will be billed for any deductible and/or co-insurance/co-payment amounts. Anything not covered by your insurance plan will be billed directly to you. If you do not have insurance (or the provider does not accept your insurance), you will be responsible for paying for the evaluation and therapy sessions.

      • Major hospitals have the most options for insurance coverage including state insurance (Medicaid, Apple Health, Amerigroup, Community Health Plan, Coordinated Care, Molina, UnitedHealthcare Community Plan).

      • To read more about alternative funding options (such as grants and scholarships) CLICK HERE

  3. Washington State Developmental Disabilities Administration (DDA/DSHS)

  • AAC Evaluation provided by a Speech-Language Pathologist

    • If the person has a DDA Case Manager, speak with the case manager to see if an AAC evaluation could be accessed using waiver funds.

  • Funding

    • This evaluation is at no cost to you.

    • AAC systems paid for with waiver funds belong to the AAC user.
